Does The Computer Need To Be Flashed When Installing Aftermarket Brake Controller In 2022 Silverado?

Updated 07/24/2025 | Published 07/14/2025

Question:

I have a 2022 Chevy Silverado 2500HD that has the factory brake controller installed. I plan on changing the suspension and brakes on my fifth wheel to disc brakes and the I/S by Morryde in the near future. I think I will need to change the brake controller, and would like use this one. Is there anything special that needs done by the dealer to prevent error messages. Also what do I need to complete the installation.

Hi Russell!

I can tell you that the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 Trailer Brake Controller w/ Custom Harness # TK52HR will include everything you need to install the controller in your 2022 Chevy Silverado 2500HD. However, I am finding a lot of conflicting information about needing to have the computer flashed or not.

If you didn't have the factory controller, you would be good to go after plugging in the new controller. The factory controller is where the differing info is coming in. Some people just unhooked it and installed a different controller and they were on their merry way. Others said they got error messages and had to go to a dealer to have their computers flashed. I wish I had a more concrete answer for you, but this was the best I could find.

What kind of 5th wheel do you have? I should be a lot more helpful if you need assistance with the disc brake and MORryde upgrade!

We have a 2022 Rockwood Ultra 2893bs. It has the torsion axles now, and what an awful ride on some of our roads. I'm thinking the disc brakes would be a major improvement over the drums that are currently installed.

@RussellD Nice camper! Disc brakes are definitely better than drums. Some say 50% to 60% less stopping distance, but that's a debatable number. That said, if you are towing a lot or your camper is on the heavier side, it's an upgrade I always recommend. You will notice the difference. I will admit to not having a lot of experience with the MORryde Independent Suspension, but I have heard it is a pretty huge improvement over leaf springs and/or torsion axles. They have a lot of travel (up to 5-1/2") and people really like them for their smoothness. One thing to note though, they be heavy. I saw a few people saying they are like 150 pounds per wheel. That weight isn't on the chassis/frame, so no worries there, but it is something to be mindful of when fully loaded. Don't want to be over weight at the scales!

@LazerS Thank you for your response, I have even asked the Chevrolet shop about flashing, and they were not sure. I guess it will be an install and see event.

@RussellD Technology doesn't seem to always be for the better these days, unfortunately. Let me know how it goes though. First hand experience with a thing is always the best and I am definitely curious to hear how it turns out.
