Great question, and the short answer is yes, you can definitely install the 200 Watt Rich Solar Kit # RS37VR yourself, as long as you're comfortable with basic tools, 12V wiring, and sealing roof holes. We have quite a few DIYers in the etrailer community who’ve had great success installing Rich Solar kits on their RVs, trailers, and even van builds.
The # RS37VR includes 200 watt panel, plus an MPPT controller, mounting brackets, and pre-crimped MC4 connectors. The general install process is as follows:
-Planning the layout on your roof make sure there's space around roof vents, antennas, etc.
-Drilling into the roof to mount the panels (you’ll need a good RV sealant like Dicor)
-Running the panel cables into your RV usually through an MC4 entry plate or fridge vent
-Mounting the controller close to the battery bank
-And connecting everything with proper fuse protection (everything is included in the kit)
We had a customer named Ethan from Springfield MO install the 400w 2 panel kit # RS97VR on his 26foot travel trailer in a weekend with help from a neighbor and some YouTube videos. He said the hardest part was getting the roof holes just right and deciding where to mount the controller inside. Keep in mind this has a little more work involved than the single panel kit # RS37VR, so you can probably get this done in an evening.
If you’re not sure how to run the cable through your rig or you’re working with a very new RV that’s under warranty, it might be worth having a mobile tech do the wiring portion. Otherwise, if you're up for the challenge, we’re here to support you, just let us know your battery type AGM vs lithium and where your batteries are located, and we’ll help you map it all out.
