Updated 07/07/2025 | Published 06/29/2025

Question:

I have a 2022 Hyundai Kona N Line, can 2 pf these Lock Rack systems fit side by side on the roof to hold 2 kayaks, and if so, how long do the cross bars need to be in order to achieve this?

Hello Jess, thanks for reaching out. It may be possible to use two of the LockRack Series-X Universal Adjustable Watersport Carriers # LR24VR, but that will completely depend on the width of your kayaks. The minimum width of the carrier is 22-1/2" and the maximum width is 42-1/2". So depending on the width of your kayaks, this may or may not be possible. Typically a roof rack would only fit one of the LockRack carriers. I don't believe I have ever seen two used side-by-side, but it technically could be possible.

If you are limited on crossbar space and need to carry two kayaks, a better option would be a J-style carrier like part # e98878. This allows the kayaks to store on their side and it would be way easier to fit two pretty much regardless of crossbar sizes.

What kind of kayaks do you have?

I have 2 pelican kayaks, I'm not sure of the models but I believe they are maybe 2 ft wide and 10 ft long. As far as cross bars, I dont have any yet, so if I need to buy ones that are longer like 58+", I can.

@Jess Hey Jess, so does your Kona have the factory flush mounted rails on the roof running front to back? Or is it a naked roof? Let me know. You will probably need to do a Yakima roof rack, since their design allows for longer than standard crossbars. There is an option for a 70" bar which would leave you plenty of room for tow LockRacks. It looks like the 2022 Kona is also 70" wide. There is also an option for a 60" bar which could work but it would be a lot more tight and probably harder to work with. Keep in mind you would need to use the T-track hardware to mount to the top channel on the crossbar. Let me know your roof style and I will get back to you with some part numbers

@Jess Great! Here is what I recommend: - Yakima JetStream Crossbars - Aluminum - Black - 70" Long - Qty 2 # Y00427 - SightLine Towers for Yakima Crossbars - Flush Side Rails - Qty 4 # Y64AR - SightClip Fit Kit for Yakima SightLine and RidgeLine Roof Rack Towers # Y25GD Or if you want to give the 60" bars a try, those are part # Y00426.
