Can I Install a 5 Flat on the Back of My 2012 Tacoma and Plug-In a 4 Flat Tailer End Into 5 Flat?

Updated 09/29/2025 | Published 05/13/2025

Question:

Hi, Im deciding between a Curt 55513 4-pin or a 56513 5-pin for my 2012 Tacoma. Its a 4 cylinder so Ill never tow anything very heavy, but is there any downside to going with the 5 pin, just to have the option? 4 pin can still connect into 5 pin, correct?

Hello Matt,

There’s absolutely no downside to installing the 5-pin connector instead of the 4-pin. In fact, I think it's a great idea.

The Curt T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness with 5-Pole Flat Trailer Connector # C56513 includes a 5th wire that's typically used for electric reverse lockout on surge brake trailers or reverse lights. Some boat or utility trailers with surge brakes use this 5th pin to disable the brakes when reversing, so if you ever need to tow that type of trailer, you’ll already be set up for it.

Plus, you will be able to hook up the 4 flat on the trailer end to the 5 flat vehicle end with zero issues! I attached an image for reverence.

What kind of trailer are you getting the Tacoma ready to pull? Do you have the other towing components to go with?

Hey Matt, did you decide to go with the 5-pin connector for your Tacoma? I'm curious to know what kind of trailer you're planning to tow and if everything worked out smoothly for you. Your experience could really help others in a similar situation!
