Can Acessories Be Mounted To The Bottom Channel Of The Thule Wingbars?

Hello James, interesting question. The Thule Wingbars like part # TH711520 do have a bottom channel, but this is only for mounting the bars to the feet. The bottom channel should not be used for mounting any kind of accessory since they are not rated to be used in this way.

What accessory were you wanting to mount to the bottom of the bar? You piqued my curiosity since I have never been asked about this before.

Thanks, Jesse. Looking to mount a 50 lbs. 270-degree awning. Combination of Jeep Wrangler height and Sky One Touch roof and limited garage height have lead me to the Thule Rapid Gutter High 8” mounts and perhaps this Thule WingBar, or the Thule ProBar. Either leaves about 1” to the garage, so I basically can’t mount anything higher than the top of the bar. Also trying to utilize a quick disconnect product for the awning. So somehow need it all to mount below the bar.

@James I mean it might be possible to insert hardware into the bottom channel but the channel would be taller than most square nuts so I would doubt the stability of that setup with a dynamic load. Not saying you can't try it but it just isn't something I can recommend doing. If anything were to go wrong it would not be covered under warranty.

@Jesse I have also thought of this... wanted to attach a basket somehow while using the portage... I have roof rails and a fit kit for the wingbar evo and also the portage on top. Would be nice to have a basket that fits within the space of the bottom wingbar and my roof... Under the canoe... Seems there is space...

@Steve I mean if there is space and you can get the hardware tightened all the way it should be ok. I'd just say be aware of the dynamic load and be careful not to overload the bars.
