How to Extend Distance Between Truck and Trailer so Tailgate Can be Opened Completely
Updated 10/22/2025 | Published 04/06/2025 >
Question:
Good morning, when my camper is attached to my truck, instead of going all the way open, the truck bed tailgate sits on top of the trailer jack. What is the best solution to allow the tailgate to open all the way so I can access what’s in the truck bed? I have a solid truck bed topper on the bed. Your help is much appreciated!

Hey Beverly, thanks for reaching out!
You might be able to rotate your trailer jack so the head sits at an angle to the tailgate so it fits, or we can get you squared away with a longer ball mount like what comes in the etrailer Ball Mount Kit # EBMK2EL. This measures 16" from the center of the hitch pin hole to the middle of the hitch ball so if you compare that to what you currently have, you'll see how much more clearance you'll get with this.
If this ball mount doesn't have enough length, please let me know and I can help you figure out what will work best for you!

Hey Beverly, how did things work out with the longer ball mount for your camper and truck setup? Did it give you enough clearance to open the tailgate fully? Your update could make it easier for others running into the same issue.
