Parts Needed to Install Dometic Penguin II 15K Btu AC Unit

Updated 10/27/2025 | Published 03/01/2025

Question:

Hi, I have a 2006 Fleetwood Flair 33R with stock two A/C Coleman Mach 13,500BTU front, and 11,000BTU rear ducted system with 30 AMP system. I wuold like to upgrade the Front A/C by using the Dometic Penguin II 15,000BTU w/heat pump to help me handle the summer days here in Las Vegas Nevada with up to 118• F. Is that possible? Do I need a conversion kit to use my current wiring setup and thermostat? Can I also use the Dometic SmartStart for Penguin II Electronic Air Conditioner? Eventually in a later time I will replace the rear A/C unit. Thanks in advance for your help.

Hey Martin, thanks for reaching out!

You might be able to get the Penguin II # DMC98ZR to work, but Dometic has been weird with wiring compatibility so if you go this route, I recommend having a professional do the installation so you can have confidence it's done the right way. Dometic also says you need the Air Distribution # DMC66RR and Thermostat # DMC23ZR for a complete setup.

The Soft Start # DMC77RR will work as well, yes.

Let me know if you have any other questions!

Hey Martin, how did things go with the Penguin II upgrade on your Fleetwood Flair? Did the new air distribution box and thermostat work smoothly with your setup? Your update could make it easier for others upgrading their RV A/C systems.
