Recommended Flat Towing Parts for a 1999 Ford Ranger 4WD

Updated 10/30/2025 | Published 02/10/2025

Question:

Im looking into putting a baseplate on a 1999 Ford Ranger 4x4, you have the Blue Ox fixed. I am curious about the tow bar itself. Will it only accept a blue ox tow bar, or will some other tow bars fit?

Hey Mike! The Blue Ox Base Plate Kit item # BX2170, that fits your 4WD 1999 Ranger, is compatible with other brands of tow bars if you use an adapter. I have listed which ones you'll need below:

Roadmaster - BlackHawk 2 All-Terrain, Nighthawk, and Sterling Tow Bar Adapter for Blue Ox Base Plates item # RM-031-5 or item # RM-031 depending on which adapter you're using.

Demco - Tow Bar Adapter Brackets for Blue Ox Base Plates item # DM9523041

If you already have a tow bar, feel free to comment below what make and model it is and I'll tell you exactly which adapter you need.

Here are the rest of the parts you will need to flat tow your 1999 Ford Ranger:

Tow Bar and Safety Chains - etrailer SD Non-Binding Tow Bar item # e47ZR

Wiring Harness - Roadmaster Diode 7-Wire to 6-Wire Flexo-Coil Wiring Kit item # RM-15267

Supplemental Braking System - Brake Buddy Select 3 Portable Supplemental Braking System item # HM39524

High Low Adapter - The tow bar needs to be within 3" of level. If you measure the height of the inside top of the hitch receiver tube on your RV, and the height difference is more than 3 inches above/below the base plate tab height, you'll need a high/low adapter. I have linked a FAQ article that explains all this in more detail along with our selection of adapters.

Hey Mike, how did things go with the Blue Ox base plate on your Ranger? Did one of the tow bar adapters you mentioned end up fitting your setup? Your update could make it easier for others working on a similar flat tow build.
