Comparing Dexter Surge Brake Actuators DX29FR And DX89FR

Updated 10/30/2025 | Published 02/05/2025

Question:

I have a ranger boat trailer with tandem axles, disc brakes on both axles. It has a UFP A-60 brake actuator on it, which is needing replaced. I have seen both DX29FR and DX89FR recommended for applications as such on your website. Could you give me a better idea on which one will slide into the existing trailer tongue? I don’t want to replace the exterior piece, only the interior assembly.

Hello Jarrod, thanks for reaching out. The main difference between the Dexter # DX29FR and # DX89FR is how they attach to the trailer tongue. Each will fit a 3" wide tongue. The # DX29FR is designed to bolt onto the end of the tongue, whereas the # DX89FR is intended to sit on top of the tongue. Both use the same 3" bolt spacing, you will just want to pick whichever one installs the same as your current actuator. I have included a few pictures with examples below.

I hope this helps, and just reply below and let me know if there is anything else I can do.

Hey Jarrod, how did things go with the replacement brake actuator for your Ranger trailer? Did one of the Dexter options line up with your existing tongue setup? Your update could make it easier for the next person working on a similar trailer.
