The best and most popular brake controller we offer is the Tekonsha Prodigy P2 Trailer Brake Controller, part # 90885. This is a proportional controller and will activate your trailer brakes in proportion to your 1998 Ford F-150 truck's braking action. This system is easy to install and to use.
The other items you need for installation depend on the type of wiring you have on your truck. If you have the factory 7-way connector on the rear of your truck then I recommend the Tekonsha Plug-In Wiring Adapter, part # 3035-P. One end plugs into the back of the brake controller and the other end plugs into the harness under the dash.
If you have the factory 4-way connector you will want part # 118242. This upgrades the vehicle wiring connector from the factory 4-way flat connector to the 7-way connector, and includes the fuses and relays needed. I have attached a link to an installation video on a 2001 Ford F-150 you can check out.
If you have no trailer connector at the rear of your F-150, you will first need to install a 4-way connector. I recommend the Curt Custom Fit Vehicle Wiring, part # C56031. This installs quickly and easily by plugging into the truck existing wiring so no cutting or splicing is required to put a 4-way connector at the back of your truck.
After the 4-way connector has been installed you will need part # ETBC7 to give you the 7-way connector at the back of your truck. This comes with the circuit breakers needed, the wire circuit tester and the mounting bracket for the 7-way connector at the back of your truck.
I have attached some link to helpful articles about brake controllers and installation you might want to check out.
