Why Do RV Motorhome Steps Require Running to a Keyed Power Source

Updated 11/17/2025 | Published 12/30/2024

Question:

Please tell me why my key has to be on for the door to activate the steps . I just had to replace a bolt that goes through the gear to the turn buckle but it worked correctly prior to that. It does not seem like I need this part but not sure. Thank you

Hey Randy, so the Lippert Module part # LC301702 that you referenced does require running to a keyed power source which means a circuit that only has voltage when the key of the vehicle is on. This is so that when the motorhome is on (engine running) the steps will go out when door is open and close when door is closed. When the RV is off it means they will extend when the door is open but won't retract when door is closed. This allows it to better serve your needs when using the door if the motorhome was parked or if you needed to briefly pop out of it.

Hey Randy, how did things go after learning more about how the keyed power source affects the step operation on your motorhome? It’d be great to hear if the steps are now working the way you expected. Your update could make it easier for others troubleshooting the same issue.
