Parts Needed to Flat Tow 2002 Jeep Wrangler TJ

Updated 12/18/2024 | Published 12/11/2024

Question:

Can you refer me to a shop near Seattle or Bellevue area that can do a complete set up of my 2019 Leisure Travel Van Unity to Flat Tow a 2002 Jeep Wrangler TJ model X, including BASE PLATE, WIRING LIGHTS, BRAKING, CHARGING etc. tow bars. I would very much appreciate your recommendations for the parts and components you would recommend if I took this install on myself. Sam

Hey Sam, I attached a link down below that will let you see all of the installers in our area that you can pick from. For parts I would go with the Roadmaster base plate kit part # RM-521424-5 as it's easier to use and installs relatively easy.

In addition to the base plates, you will also need a compatible tow bar, safety cables, lighting, and supplemental braking to flat tow your vehicle. The most popular compatible tow bar is the Falcon All Terrain, # RM-522. This has non-binding arms which makes the setup very easy to connect/disconnect.

For lighting/safety cables, locks, and covers for the tow bar we have the Roadmaster Falcon All Terrain kit part # RM-9243-1 which comes with all of that as one part number. The diode kit that comes with this allows you to splice into the taillight wiring so that your RV controls the vehicle taillights and does not require drilling into the taillight housings. This comes with a round 6-way connector that you will install on the front of your towed vehicle and enough coiled wire to go from there to the RV.

And finally, most states now require supplemental braking in the vehicle being flat towed. The easiest system to set up and use is the Blue Ox Patriot # BLU37TR, that applies the vehicle brakes in proportion to how much the tow vehicle is braking. This is the safest way to stop and it reduces wear and tear on both vehicles.

@JamesonC You have been a terrific resource for me but I’m still confused on braking. How does the motor home tells the jeep when to apply the brakes? Sam

@SamW Great question, so the Blue Ox Patriot part # BLU37TR has an inertia sensor built into that senses how hard you are applying the motorhome brakes and then presses the brake pedal in the Jeep to apply it's brakes in a proportional manner.

Jameson What needs to be added to my motor home that signals the jeep to brake? What do I add to the motor home cab that tells the driver the jeep is braking properly?

@SamW The Blue Ox Patriot that I mentioned comes with everything needed for the braking of the Jeep. You wouldn't need anything beyond what comes with it. If you have more questions on the specifics of how it works let me know and I can break it down further. This also comes with a monitor for inside the cab of the motorhome that will let you know when it is applying the brakes too.

@JamesonC I the presume the Demco Stay N Play Duo kit would also include monitor (same as the Patriot) in the cab?

@SamW Yes, actually that specific version of the DUO comes with a wireless in-cab monitor which I picked since you had mentioned that earlier.
