How do I Run Appliances Off of Batteries While Using a Progressive Dynamics Converter?

Updated 12/15/2025 | Published 11/21/2024

Question:

So i am building a camper from scratch out of a cargo trailer. I ordered and received and have installed the PD4560, still waiting on my shore power cord to show up in the mail. I have all my 110v hooked up and i am starting on my 12v system. I didnt have plans on running a battery in my electrical system since over 90 of the time i will be hooked to shore power. Other 10 was just gonna run off a generator. Once i started on the 12v systems i had some questions pop in my mind. - i noticed no ground bar for the 12v system, so went to home store bought one and installed - how does the 12v system work if the ground bar isnt grounded to anything but plastic - where do i ground it at? - if i do have to have a battery for the 12v system, how do you wire the 12v system to work with out any type of shore power? - how do you wire the 12v system to work when the trailer is hooked up to tow vehicle?

Hello JT.

Yes, the system does not come with a ground bar. Since you are using a ground bar, you will want to install it on the chassis (frame) of the trailer. It has to be installed on metal. There should be spots located on the ground bar where you need to put the screws. You cannot ground it to plastic.

The Progressive Dynamics 4500 Series RV Converter w/ Charge Wizard and AC/DC Distribution Panel - 60 Amp # PD4560K18LS8 is used for hooking up to shore power/generator for your AC and DC appliances and it also charges and maintains your batteries. If you are looking to dry camp (boondock), then you will need to also install an inverter like the Progressive Dynamics 2000 Watt Inverter w/ Transfer Switch # PD64FR. This unit will convert your batteries DC current to AC current so you can run your appliances. The # PD64FR also has a built in transfer switch so when you connect to shore power it will know to automatically switch over. It also comes with a fixed remote so when you are using your batteries for your appliances you can monitor voltage, output power, error codes, and a low battery indicator.

It is not recommended to run your inverter heavily on battery power while towing as it will drain your batteries very quickly. You can however use it for low power needs like keeping a small refrigerator cold but do this on a low setting, and please be mindful of the battery levels to make sure you are not drawing too much power. You don't want to go boondocking with dead batteries, as you will not be able to use your appliances.

I have included some review videos to check out. Please also remember that electricity is dangerous, if you are unsure of the installation please have a certified tech help with the install.

Hey JT, how did things go after grounding your 12v system to the trailer frame and getting your shore power cord connected? It’d be great to hear if the PD4560 setup is working smoothly with your camper build. Your update could make it easier for others wiring a similar system.
