How to Identify Axle on 1981 Backhoe Trailer

Updated 12/15/2025 | Published 11/03/2024

Question:

I have a 1981 backhoe trailer with electric brakes. The axles are 4 and appear to be 9000? Lb. I want to buy new seals and brake parts but dont know the axle info. Is there a serial no or manufacturer stamped on the axles somewhere? Thanks Rod

Hi Rod; axles typically have an axle tag on them. Your trailer is pretty old so it may be worn or missing. A metal axle tag might have managed to hold up and have the serial number on it. Assuming the axle manufacturer is still in business they could use that to identify it. If it is a Dexter axle it may also be stamped into the axle but I'm not sure when they started doing that.

Outside of that you're going to be pulling the hubs and measuring bearings and seals to identify it. The brakes may not have parts anymore. If the backing plates are welded to the axle you're really out of luck on brake parts. If you manage to identify it or get some more info I can check to see if we have some parts available. Realistically, I would expect to have to replace the axles.

Hey Rod, were you able to find any markings or a tag on your backhoe trailer’s axles? Once you have that info, I can help narrow down the right seals and brake parts. Let me know what you find—I’m happy to help sort it out.
