How/What Do I Measure To Know What Replacement Cam Lock To Buy?

Question:
My current door on my camper propane tank storage door 5 gal does not lock - it is a simple turn knob. How/what do I measure to know what replacement cam lock to buy to replace what I have with a locking knob? Thank you.

Hello Paula, thanks for reaching out. You will want to measure the diameter of the lock but the most important thing is the length. Almost all of the cam locks will be 3/4" diameter but the length can vary. You will want to be sure the cam is long enough for the lock to engage.
For example, the Cam Lock # A522VP you were looking at is 1-1/8" long overall excluding the face of the lock. The lock tab sits about 9/16" behind the back of the lock face. I have included a diagram with more detailed dimensions for you below. I suggest you compare this to the current latch and make sure it is a match. If you need a different size just let me know and I am happy to look into it.
