Reducing Chucking When Towing 5th Wheel w/ 2007 Tundra Equipped w/ SuperGlide 5th Wheel Hitch

Updated 05/30/2014 | Published 05/28/2014

Question:

I have a 2007 5.7 Toyota Tundra 4x4 6.5foot bed, with a 15K SuperGlide receiver bolted in my truck and a special adapter plate tack welded to my Pin assembly so the Super Glide can attach and operate properly. What and how can I add something to stop the rough ride I am experiencing hauling my new 10 year old Wildcat 29foot 5th wheel trailer.8K empty, 10K loaded The # on the gooseneck is 4X4FWCD2X4V009121 other info says LIPP 1621 Rating 15,500 CSA Z24012-M99 My first camping trip with this hook up was @250 miles and even on the hi-way I experienced a fairly regular chucking. Im looking for the most bang for the buck, and dont need the extra bells and whistles, if the minimum add-on can help smooth things out a bit. Thank you

Chucking is usually caused by a loose fit between the jaws of the fifth wheel and the king pin. The jaws can be tight enough to secure the king pin, but loose enough to allow a bit of movement. Even if this 'slop' is only an 1/8 of an inch, it gets pretty amplified when its caused by a 10K fifth wheel. It can certainly make for an unpleasant ride. In some cases this loose fit is just the nature of the beast, and in some cases it's caused by worn parts. I'd recommend giving the jaw assembly of your hitch a close inspection, to ensure nothing is excessively worn.

Replacing your existing Lippert 1621 Pin Box with a replacement air ride pin box would go a long way to isolate some of the bouncing and chucking you're experiencing. The TrailAir Air Ride Pin Box you looked at, part # LC158778 would be a great choice. The TrailAir Flex Air, part # LC328492 goes even further, by providing a base that can pivot, further dampening the chucking you describe.
