Recommended 5th Wheel Hitch for a 2025 Chevy Silverado 2500 w/ a Factory Puck System

Updated 05/05/2025 | Published 10/23/2024

Question:

Hi hello, I am trying to outfit my 2025 Chevy Silvervado 2500HD standard bed with 5th wheel prep- with a 5th wheel hitch to support a Cougar 29bhl that weighs maybe 11,000, hitch weight 1,610. I dont believe I want the sliding hitch. And I dont want it to be the heaviest out there. Currently looking at the Curt A20. Do you have any recommendations?

Hey Caitlin congrats on the new truck! The Curt A20 5th Wheel Hitch item # C84FR is definitely a solid hitch that does mount directly to your Silverado's factory puck system. It has a 20,000 lbs capacity so it'll definitely have enough strength for your Keystone Cougar.

The reason I like the Curt A20 item # C84FR is because of the dual-jaw system. They interlock when the jaws are closed, which ensures total security and grip around your king pin. This system is what is going to provide you with a more comfortable, smoother towing experience than other hitches because it helps ensure a quieter ride than a hitch with only one jaw.

Another feature that makes the Curt A20 item # C84FR stand out is its color- coded indicator system that lets you know if the jaws on the hitch are ready to couple, uncouple or tow. This, along with its built-in zerk fittings so you can lube the hitch, make it one of the easiest to use. It weighs 152 lbs which is comparable to other model hitches that fit the puck system.

Please note it is recommended to use a sliding 5th wheel hitch on a truck with a 6-3/4' bed. This will give you enough clearance to do a full 90 degree turn and not worry about your truck and trailer colliding. The best one for your Silverado is going to be the B&W Companion OEM 5th Wheel Hitch w/ Slider for Chevy/GMC Towing Prep Package item # BWRVK3775.

@CaitK You're welcome! Happy to help! There is an A20 available in a slider configuration but it does require an adapter to mount to the puck system. It is the Curt A20 5th Wheel Hitch w/ S20 Slider for Ford and Chevy/GMC Prep Package - Dual Jaw item # C58ZJ.

Hi again! So looking into the BWRVK3775 it seems to breakdown into two parts and weigh around 250#. Is there a sliding hitch option for the chevy 2500 (2025) OEM puck system that weighs less or more easily removable? Thanks in advance!

@CaitK No, not really they're all pretty heavy and comparable weight wise. The Demco Recon 5th Wheel Hitch w/ Slider item # DM97YV is slightly lighter at 210 lbs. However, it does not break down as easy which is why I recommended the B&W Companion item # BWRVK3775.

Hey Jerred, I like your response to Caitlin. I have one question to follow up. Since you are recommending the BWRVK3775, I am curious about any concerns with tailgate interference when hitch sliding is engaged to allow backward movement towards the tailgate. Not to split hairs but the 2024 GMC 2500 HD AT4 bed is actually 6'10". The extra 2" make a difference? I am picking up a 2025 Jayco Eagle with similar size and weight specs to Caitlins RV. I saw a reviewer say they regretted getting the slide because (A) they didn't need it for turning and (B) when slide was released the PIN box hit the tailgate. How do I determine measurements to be sure?

@LR Thank you! Any additional space is going to make all the difference. The answer about clearance is going to depend on a couple of things. One of them being how far the nose sticks out in relation to where the king pin is on your Jayco Eagle. I can't help with that because we don't have that information. What I can tell you is the Companion # BWRVK3775 will slide 12" in the sliding position toward your tailgate. You can use the gooseneck hole in your truck and measure 12" from it towards the back of your bed to get a rough idea of where the kingpin is going to attach. The B&W Companion item # BWRVK3775 will sit a maximum of 19" high, which is taller than most. Do you know how far back your king pin is in relation to the nose on your new Jayco?
