What are the Advantages for Using Bigger Trailer Tires

Updated 12/22/2025 | Published 10/07/2024

Question:

Hello, adding brakes to 1 axle of a tandem axle 3500lb x2 trailer. Which axle is the preferred mounting axle? Is there an advantage other than weight rating and air pressure to use a 225/75R15 over a 205? Trailer is only rated at 7k 3500 × 2 =7000. Do not know unladen weight at this time. Will take to be weighed when all work to refurbish is done. Has 2200 lb rated rims on it now, 15 x 6 with 5 by 4.5 bolt pattern. Thank you for your help and have a great day Kirk

Hey Kirk, the front is going to be the best but now some states are requiring brakes on both axles so you'll want to check with your local laws and see what applies to you.

The only advantage to using taller 225/75R15 tires to a 205/75R15 tires is increased ride height (~1") as well as an increased capacity. Larger tries can handle more weight, so if you needed a bit more capacity then I'd go with the bigger tires - assuming your fenders have the space for the bigger tire.

Hey Kirk, how did things go with adding brakes to the front axle on your trailer? Did the larger 225/75R15 tires end up giving you the clearance and capacity you needed? Your update could make it easier for others working on similar tandem axle setups.
