Can The Yakima SlimShady Awning Y96VR Be Inverted To Provide Shade For Vehicle?

Updated 09/23/2024 | Published 09/08/2024

Question:

Can you recommend a roof rack mounted awning designed to cover the panaramic glass roof and windshield while the suv is parked under 110 degree parking lot. Just like the Yakima slim shady instead of side mounting— front mounted and pulled forward toeards the engine?

Hello Jojo, that is a really interesting question. All of the roof rack mounted awnings we offer are designed to be side mounted. The only thing I can think of would be if you took an awning like the Yakima OverNOut Awning # Y36VR and invert it to open towards the vehicle. You could extend the awning over the car and extend the legs on the other side of the car. This will cover a nice large portion of it. It might be a bit awkward opening the awning since you would have to climb up on top of the car. Looking at the way the awning mounts, the 8' long awning would be plenty long to clear the side of the car. Just keep in mind these awnings are not intended to be used in this way, so you are getting into uncharted territory here and you may have to get creative.

The awning would easily cover the sunroof but depending on your roof rack setup it may not cover the entire windshield. If it doesn't, I would just use a sun shade etrailer 2-in-1 Exterior Windshield and Wiper Blade Cover # e98899 to cover the rest.
