Question:

I have a 2020 Toyota 4 Runner TRD Pro with a Prinsu roof rack. It has T channels built in. I want to add two J racks for kayaks. One of my kayaks is a Jackson Yupik 35 wide and quite heavy. What do you recommend for my vehicle and rack system?

Hey Tim, thanks for reaching out!

The only J-Style kayak carrier we have that can accommodate the 93 lbs of your Jackson Yupik is the etrailer System # e98878. This uses clamps that fit around 3-1/8" wide x 1-1/2" tall crossbars so if that the dimensions of the cross sections on your Prinsu roof rack you can use 2 of these get your kayaks on your 2020 Toyota 4Runner TRD Pro.

I'm guessing that your rails might be slightly larger than that and you need to use T-Slot mounting hardware for the installation. In that case, the etrailer system won't work and I recommend using the following:

- Kuat Class 4 V2 # KU53VR (standard kayak)
- Yakima BigCatch # Y04091 (Jackson Yupik)

In order to mount the BigCatch on your Prinsu you'll also need the Smart-Slot Crossbar Adapter Kit # Y04092.

Both of these carriers can install into the T-Slots on your system and are able to accommodate your different loads. The BigCatch is a saddle-style, but that's pretty typical for heavier kayaks, and I actually feel more comfortable recommending that even if it's over our brand carrier simply because the weight will settle better into saddles as opposed to a J-Style.
