Replacement For Bad Tekonsha Brake Controller Acting Weird
Updated 08/14/2024 | Published 08/11/2024 >
Question:
I bought a truck that came with a Tekonsha brake controller. I have been having problems with it and before I purchase a new one I wanted to see if any of your experts have heard of this issue. Occasionally under light braking at lower speeds the brake controllers light will randomly turn green/orange/red and brake unexpectedly hard or have no trailer brakes assisting at all. It will almost flash random colors and brake along with the color of that makes sense. Other times it will work as it should. I ha e inspected the wiring connections and do not have any loose connections. Is this a sign of a bad brake controller?

Hey Alex,
That's very weird , and I can't find any reference to a brake controller both flashing and braking out of nowhere or no brakes at all; that's honestly the worst of both worlds. I'm not sure what controller you have but it does sound older if it's one that has different colored lights as opposed to a screen. If I were you I'd definitely upgrade to a more modern, reliable controller like the Prodigy P3 # 90195.

Thanks Kyle. Yes, on my brake controller if I set the brakes to grab lightly it will illuminate yellow and fade to red the stronger it brakes. When I brake and watch the controller it will go from green (no brake) and randomly pulse at different levels. The light will show orange, maybe flash red for a millisecond and the brakes grab really hard. I think a newer controller would be a good idea.
