Troubleshooting No Power from the Blue Brake Controller Wire

Updated 02/03/2026 | Published 07/08/2024

Question:

I have a 2016 F 350 DUALLY . I have no power to blue trailer brake wire, have checked fuses and they are good, checked trailer brakes with separate battery and they work. I found 2 wires that were going to ground on the tailer and shouldnt have been . I corrected them but still no power at blue wire from truck. do I have to have truck moving for trailer brakes to work from truck?

Yes, and no proportional brake controllers will not engage the brakes with the pedal unless the tow vehicle is in motion. You would need to use your manual override button if you want to check the brakes while sitting idle. A proportional controller, which is the most common type, senses the motion of the vehicle, and applies the brakes with the same degree of force that the vehicle is slowing down.

If you're getting power to the trailer brakes using a battery then the issue is either with your brake controller or you've got a fault in the blue wire somewhere between your controller and your truck's 7-Way.

I am curious as to where you are checking the blue wire for power and if you have tried to use the manual override button on your brake controller. Hopefully these troubleshooting steps help but if not or you need more assistance feel free to comment below and I will be happy to get into this more with you.

Hey, what ended up happening with the blue brake wire on your F-350 after trying the manual override on your controller? Knowing if that gave you power could really help others chasing the same issue. Your update could make it easier for the next person troubleshooting their trailer brakes.
