Question:
Can you recommend a battery and battery box for this winch. Should a trickle charger work when not in use.

I'd go with a quality "starting battery" for your winch. The nicest one you can afford and keep it charged up between uses. We do not carry those batteries, but we do carry battery boxes. The Deka Battery Box part # 329-HM318BKS would probably work well for you, but you would have to compare it's inner dimensions to the external dimensions of your battery.
This box has inner dimensions of 14-5/8" long x 7" wide x 8" deep.
For a good charger I would recommend the CTEK MULTI US 7002 12-Volt Universal Battery Charger w/ Pulse Maintenance and Backup Power # CTEK56353. I have one of these chargers and love it. It works well on my motorcycle and car batteries.
