Question:
You reviewed the Swagman Quad 2+2 and I understand the company warrants it to support bikes up to 45lbs each. Accepting that going over this would void the warranty, what would your impression be regarding that limitation? I am looking to put two e-assist bikes on this rack that weigh just over 46 lbs each without batteries and a couple of kids bikes around 20lbs and Im wondering if you felt 45 lbs was pushing it with the durability of this rack, or if Im close enough that I should have confidence in just being slightly over the weight for two of the bikes.

Hey Ryan, that is a great question, and a tricky one to answer. Bike racks like the Swagman Quad 2+2 # S64FR are given their weight ratings for good reason. These racks go thru extensive testing, and the 45 lb limit is what the rack can safely support during normal driving conditions. Most racks are tested with heavier weights, but we still have to stick to the listed weight rating.
Is the rack going to immediately fail if you put a 46 lb bike on it? No, probably not. Are you taking a major risk by knowingly exceeding the manufacturers specified weight capacity? Yes, absolutely. Keep in mind you would be risking damaging your bikes, risking your safety, as well as the safety of other motorists. So, while you might be able to get away with it, I cannot in good conscience recommend that you exceed the weight rating for this, or any rack.
That said, the Yakima HoldUp 4 Bike Rack # Y02443-2 is a great option for carrying 4 bikes and it has a 50 lb per bike weight capacity.
