Do Torque Specs for Installation of a Trailer Hitch on a 2003 Saturn Vue have to be Followed

Question:

Hi, Im trying to install part #13591 to my Saturn Vue 2003 and I have couple of questions: 1. In the instruction it says: Torque all M12 hardware to 79 ft-lbs. Torque all 1/2inch hardware to 110 ft-lbs. So all of the bolts are the M12 what is the 1/2inch hardware? Also, can I use my hand wrench, since I dont have a torque wrench? 2. Which is the suitable ball mount for this model for my car. Can I use the 4inch one?

On a 2993 Saturn Vue you should be fishwiring in 1/2 inch bolts and blocks through the frame and to the bolt holes on top of the hitch as indicate in step 5. The bolts that get fishwired in are 1/2 inch carriage bolts.

It is important to get the bolts to the proper torque spec. If they are too tight you can damage the hitch and vehicle. If they are not tight enough you could loose the hitch. Most auto parts stores will loan out tools. You will need a torque wrench that goes up to at least 110 pounds.

The proper ball mount is going to depend on the rise or drop needed to tow the trailer level. I have linked a help article that shows how to measure for the right rise or drop when choosing a ball mount.

You can also use etrailer ball mount kit # 989900. It comes with 2 ball mounts, 2 balls, a hitch pin with clip, and a storage bag. And if you need wiring you can use # 118418 which plugs in line with the vehicle tail light wiring.
