What Can Cause Excessive Tire Wear On The Inside Edge?

Updated 02/17/2026 | Published 06/07/2024

Question:

2006 Featherlite Stock Combo, 16 ft bumper pull with Dexter Torsion Axles Recently I have noticed excessive inside edge tire wear with some cupping on the front axle drivers side and some slight wear on the passenger side rear axle. No visible damage to Axles or evidence that they have shifted. Bearings/spindles look good. How do you tell if the axle is bad or could the trailer be out of alignment? Not sure wear to start. Thanks

Hello Andrew. The most common causes for excessive wear on the inside edge of the tires are either a damaged or overloaded axle. If a trailer axle is overloaded it's center will bend down toward the road surface and this will change its geometry, causing the inside edges of the tires to make more contact with the road surface than the outside edges. If the axle has been overloaded and damaged it will need to be replaced. I also suggest that you make sure all four tires are properly inflated. Also double check the suspension for any damaged or worn components and replace as needed.

Hey Andrew, how did things go after checking your axle and suspension for damage or overload? It’d be great to hear if that helped even out the tire wear on your Featherlite trailer. Your update could make it easier for others dealing with the same issue.
