What To Do If Your RV Refrigerator Has A Freon Leak

Updated 05/06/2024 | Published 05/05/2024

Question:

I purchase my camper from mountaineer r/v sales in West Virginia. Around 15 months ago. Noticed the freezer wasn’t cold and later on noticed the frig wasn’t getting cold. Took it back to them to have it looked at. After only camping in the camper 3 times. They told me that the frig has a freon leak. I really don’t understand how a frig can get a Freon leak only being 15 months old.

Hey Ron,

If this a brand new refrigerator as of 15 months ago then I would definitely be questioning how it was installed. If they found a Freon leak then was it a cut/knick/dent in the line or was it a bad fitting. RV's aren't known for a smooth ride so there is also the possibility that the vibration from road shock could've damaged the line, but I feel this is likely just a subpar installation that lead to this. The RV place doesn't sound like they're wanting to solve the problem for you so I'd see what kind of info you can get on where the damage is and reach out to the manufacturer of the fridge to see if they'd warranty it.

If you end up having to replace it you'll want to measure the space available for the fridge and then we can start looking at the best replacement option. You could see if there's a local refrigeration tech that could take a look and possibly fix it but this tends to be a complete replacement most of the time.
