The Pop & Lock Custom Tailgate Lock with Handle # PAL1700C is plastic with a chrome finish added to it. According to the reviews we've received people are saying the quality is pretty similar to what came as factory on their truck so I wouldn't say it is high quality, but I also wouldn't say you're downgrading by replacing your OEM 2012 GMC Canyon handle with this.

When I'm shopping online 1-Star ratings make me a little nervous as well so you aren't alone there. I will say that looking at the few 1-Star review ratings we have on this product the one doesn't give too much info on how it broke and the other one sounds like it may not have been fully adjusted before they shut both their tailgate and tonneau cover which is still frustrating, but you would want to definitely test that the tailgate is working properly (and has been adjusted properly) prior to potentially locking your whole truck bed up.

I'm still confident that this is similar quality to your OEM handle due to a lot more of the reviews giving it a better rating with more information regarding their thoughts on the product itself and how they feel about the quality.
