Can this latch be slammed shut or do you have to be gentle with it?

The lid of the Rampage Trail Can Locking Storage Box # RA86622 is really not designed to be slammed shut. There is an arm attached to the lid that would stop the lid from falling freely and slamming shut. The container and lid are made of steel, so while it surely could take a good bit of abuse, we recommend closing the lid as gently as possible.
