Can Strap from Jif Marine Winch Come From Bottom of Drum

Question:

I want to purchase the 315-W3200D JIF Marine winch. Does it matter if the strap goes over the top or under the bottom of the strap reel? Will the brake work in either direction? I plan to orient the winch with the reel facing towards the boat the the gear mechanisms facing toward the hitch.

Yes, the strap on the # 315-W3200D can be installed so that it comes from the bottom instead of the top. However, doing so will reverse the switch and the direction you turn the handle for operation. The self-locking mechanism will work either way. The orientation you are describing with the drum facing the boat is how the winch is typically installed on a boat trailer.
