Troubleshooting An RV Water Pump That Continues To Run After A Faucet Turns Off

Updated 08/09/2023 | Published 08/08/2023

Question:

I have a 2020 keystone sprinter, I replaced the water pump and now have water but it pressures up and shuts off as normal, when I turn on the faucet the pump kicks on , shut off the faucet and pump continuously runs unless you run all the pressured water down then the pump will build up volume, then shut faucet off and pump build pressure again and shuts off, have had to do this process every time and is a big waste of water, any suggestions? Up dry camping now

An RV water pump should only turn on as the faucet calls for water. If the pump keeps running you either have a leak or issue with the pressure switch of your water pump. The first thing to check is the voltage to the pump before and during use with a multimeter # PT89ZR. If the pump is getting the required voltage (12v or 120v depending on model) to properly function it can cause a false reading for the pressure switch. The pressure switch could also need an adjustment if the psi level is set too high it will cause it to run continuously after the faucet is turned off to rebuild pressure. You'll want to check with the manufacturer of your pump to ensure yours is set correctly.

There is also the chance that air is getting into your lines somehow and causing an air lock. The only way to determine this would be to trace the lines and check each connection point.
