Question:

Have a 1999 Dodge durango 5.2 lt engine want to tow my 26 foot RV MGW 5500 lbs. When I hook it up to the hitch with weight distribution system. The back of the vehicle is ping 3 to 31/2 inches front comes up about 1. The springs are pretty well compressed. it is a older SUV in great shape but Im sure the shocks and leaf springs have not been replaced in some time. What do you recommend is the best fix to this problem without costing me a arm and a leg.

With the rear axle of your vehicle sagging up to 3-1/2 inches and the front axle only raising 1 inch, you might be able to adjust your weight distribution system and you may not need to invest in a vehicle suspension enhancements system like air helper springs.

When using a weight distribution system the measurements at the axles will vary but the weight should be distributed evenly across the two axles. Depending on your weight distribution system there are several adjustments that could be made. You may need to adjust the height of the weight distribution ball, the angle of the head assembly, the tension setting of the spring bar.

I have included a helpful link article about weight distribution systems that might help you out. I also linked a video of the Pro-Series Weight Distribution System # PS49583 that shows some of these measurements taken when installing a weight distribution system and explains adjustments that may be needed.

It is also possible that the weight distribution system that you have may not be properly rated for your trailer and Durango tongue weight. If that is the case then you are not getting the benefits of having a weight distribution system. Please feel free to reply directly to me with the make and model of your current weight distribution system and I can see what I can find out for you.

Before investing in additional enhancement systems, you may also consider having your Durango suspension inspected. If the suspension shows signs of dammage or is worn out and not working properly, additional suspension systems will not work if the existing suspension is worn out and needs to be replaced.

After you have checked out the weight distribution system and your vehicle suspension and have made sure that all is functioning and adjusted properly, then you are correct in considering some additional suspension enhancement. However, the kit that you referenced is not considered a fit for your vehicle. Of the options that are confirmed as a fit for your Durango, I recommend using a Timbren System like the # TDDR00. This is a cost effective, and simple installation that will eliminate vehicle sag. These springs do not effect the ride of your Durango when not under a load, but will become more rigid when placed under an increasing load.
