How Much Modification Is Required To Replace An Atwood G6A-8E RV Water Heater With A Dometic DMC74FR

Published 07/20/2023

Question:

I need to replace my Atwood G6A-8E water heater. What modifications are required to replace with Dometic RV Water Heater # DMC74FR? I have a 2019 Thor Freedom Elite 26HE. I considered a tankless but it uses and wastes more water than a heater with a tank.

The biggest differences between the Atwood G6A-8E and he Dometic # DMC74FR are going to be the power sources and the sizing. The G6A-8E require 12v DC power to operate the electrical components while the # DMC74FR requires 120v AC power to operate. This means that you'll have to run an outlet to your water heater location to plug it in and wouldn't be able to be able to run the water heater unless you were plugged into shore power or had an inverter. You won't be able to use the same wiring that you already have in place so I recommend just capping it off with electrical tape so that it can be used later on if you ever switch back to a 12v water heater.

The G6A-8E is 12-1/2" H x 16" W x 18" D, whereas the # DMC74FR is 12-3/4" H x 12-3/4" W x 19-7/8" D so you'll have to trim the cutout hole a bit taller and frame in the sides with some wood or metal so that you have something to mount the unit to. This is going to leave you with gaps on the side that you can fill in with some plywood and then cover with We also do not currently offer the access door for this model so you would need to contact Dometic for the access door (part number 94016) and ask about the adapter plates to help cover the opening.

You'll want to use butyl tape # AL28FJ on the mounting flanges and then go around the outside edge with some non-sag sealant # 344270341437-1 to prevent any water from leaking into your trailer's walls. If you don't want to swap over to 120v or deal with the door issues we also offer the Furrion RV Tankless Water Heater # FR48SR, which would run off gas an 12v DC power and comes with a 16" x 18" access door to cover the old cutout.
