Can the OptiMate Solar Duo Solar Charging System with Controller Be Extended

Updated 05/09/2023 | Published 05/06/2023

Question:

I have a pontoon boat that I keep in a large covered building. The closest I could put the solar panel on the roof would be 20-25 feet from the batteries, can I extend the wire length to accommodate my needs or would it take away the amperage or voltage. If so what size wire should I use? Thinking of using the MA49JR

Expert Reply:

When using the OptiMate Solar Duo Solar Charging System with Controller # MA49JR, the manufacturer does recommend not extending the wire. But, they do mention it can be done if absolutely necessary under a few conditions.

1: The pins on the plug of the extension cord are the same number, size and shape as those of plug on charger.
2: The extension cord is properly wired and in good electrical condition, and
3: The conductor wire size is large enough for the DC ampere rating of the charger

We do carry a few extensions from OptiMate that fit those needs.

- Extension Cable for Optimate Solar Charging Systems # MA55JR (15')
- Extension Cable for Optimate Solar Charging Systems # MA46DR (25')

You will drop some power over that run, but you should still be good to go with maintaining your battery on your Pontoon.
