What Size Spare Tires Does the Curt Hitch for a 2006 Mercury Mariner Work With

Question:
I bought a 2006 mariner. I like that the Curt 13650 hitch tucks up nicely where others leave a gap. I see you answered a question about a 235/70R16 spare tire, replying you could not confirm if the hitch fits with this spare tire. Considering the vehicle is 17 years old, have you yet been able to answer this question? Secondly, is there an option for the front of the hitch tube to be covered or boxed in so it does not collect road debris, stones, sand etc. In the past I have welded my own metal plate and repowdercoated the hitch, but this is time consuming and costly on an already expensive product.. Thank you.

The Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver part # 13650 which is a fit for a 2006 Mercury Mariner is designed to work alongside the factory sized spare tire per the manufacturer. If you have anything other than this then we would indeed not be able to confirm fit. I did some research for you online and it looks like the factory spare tire size for this vehicle should be a 195/55R20 but I also encourage you to reach out to a local dealer to confirm this. We don't really do testing in-house with different size spare tires and are at the mercy of what information the manufacturer provides. There are all different sizes of spare tires that can be stowed under the vehicle and it's not possible for the manufacturer to test them all which is why they can only confirm fit with the factory size.
In regards to protection, the back side of the receiver is not enclosed and we don't have an option for this but what you should be able to do is install a cover like the Curt Rubber Tube Cover part # C22272.
