How To Add More Stopping Power to EZ Loader Trailer with Drum Brakes on One Axle

Updated 03/13/2023 | Published 03/12/2023

Question:

I have an EZ loader trailer K2500 rated to carry 7000lbs with and a GVWR of 9480 lbs. Its a tandem axle with Uin-Servo 10 drum brakes on one axle. I upgraded the surge brake with a reverse lockout solenoid, although maybe not needed with the Uni-Servo design. What is available to upgrade to stronger braking? Im okay with drums, but would like a flush-out option. Do you recommend adding brakes to the other axle? Thjanks!

Helpful Expert Reply:

Yes, your best and most cost effective option for increasing the braking on your trailer would simply be to add brakes to the other axle. You really can't go with a larger size without replacing the axle and switching to disc won't increase stopping dramatically considering how much it will cost. Therefore, I recommend a second set of drum brakes and it sounds like you would need the Hydraulic Trailer Brake Kit part # AKFBBRK-35-D and Easy Grease Trailer Hub/Drum Assembly part # AKHD-545-35-G-EZ-K. These are for a 3,500 lb axle so you'll need to be sure this is what you have which I think to be the case but if not just let me know.
