Will Higher Towing Capacity on Curt Hitch Increase Towing Capacity on 2023 Outlander PHEV

Published 02/17/2023

Question:

You show the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver # C13398 as a fit for the 23 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV. It shows weight limits of 3500/350 lbs. That is higher than the towing/tongue limits published by Mitsubishi. Does this mean the vehicle can tow more with this Curt hitch receiver vs. the factory receiver which I do not have, or does the manufacturers lower limit still apply? I have a 2900lb load Id like to be able to tow with my Outlander. Thank you.

Expert Reply:

Aftermarket hitches often have a max gross trailer weight and tongue weight that exceeds what the vehicle is capable of. You will always be limited by the lowest towing capacity whether that is the hitch or your 2023 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV. A hitch like the # C13398 will not increase the towing capacity of your vehicle. Make sure to consult your owner's manual to find the towing capacity of your Outlander.

Also, at this time we cannot confirm that this hitch fits the 2023 Outlander PHEV. After talking with Curt, they previously misspoke and what they tested this hitch on was a 2022. It is possible it will fit if no changes have been made on the 2023, but we have not had a chance to install it and Curt has not tested it as of February 2023.
