Question:
When using part C55384, or something similar, by splicing it to lighting for a headache rack, modern trucks recognize this as a trailer. When the headache rack is connected via the 7 or 4 way plug behind the bumper, parking sensors, back up camera, etc,. functions are limited/altered/reduced. How do you prevent the truck from thinking the headache rack is a trailer?

Expert Reply:
Using the Curt T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness for Factory Tow Package # C55384 will vary from truck to truck if you want to use it for a 3rd brake light. Some trucks will take any power that goes through this connector to tell the computer you are towing while others will not make any changes until it sees power being drawn on the charge line. You can consult your dealership or owners manual to determine if you can use this type of connection.
I do know a lot of installers will tie into the 3rd brake light using Quick Splices # SWC502885-1 or another form of connector. This will allow them to not only tie into the 3rd brake light but also the bed light so they do not lose that feature.
