Mud Flap Fitment and Recommendation for Flat Towing Behind a Motorhome with Recessed Bumper

Updated 09/30/2022 | Published 09/29/2022

Question:

2018 Thor Chateau 31W 36 inch wide Roadmaster RoadWing mudflap system indicates that a recessed Hitch on the RV could cause a problem. Would the 24 inch wide suffice to protect the towed vehicle even with the dual wheels of the RV?

All of the RoadMaster RoadWing Removable Mud Flap kits, like part # RM-4400 and # RM-4400-102 you mentioned, have the same basic dimensions so if you have trouble fitting one you'll have trouble fitting the other. For these to fit properly you need at least 2" of shank on your tow bar. If you have that much spacing past your bumper then these will fit and clear your bumper just fine.

An alternative solution that I recommend going with is the Rock Tamers # ERT00108. These use 24" mud flaps but you can tilt the arms away which not only helps adjust the height of the mud flaps but it also means they are likely to fit better with a recessed hitch. The Rock Screen # RT37FR can also be added to the mix to essentially give you one giant rock screen protector from one edge of the rock tamers to the other.

We also have some other protector guards and screens designed for flat tow setups to help prevent debris from hitting the towed vehicle but I'll need to know what tow bar you're using to make a recommendation that will fit properly.

Attached are some review videos for you to check out as well.
