From information gleaned, you can install this system without removing the headliner of your vehicle. Do you need any special tools to install it?

Yes, the installation instructions just have you installing the Thule Top Track Roof Mount System # THTP42 from the roof of the vehicle and not having to do anything on the inside. You will drill the holes in your roof using a 1/8" drill bit and then installing the M5 flare nut insert (see linked instructions).
The 1/8" drill bit is included with the kit so the tools you need to have handy on your end (which are pretty common) include the following:
Masking tape
9/16" Wrench
Center punch
Hammer
Tape measure
Electric drill
Safety glasses
