Curt trailer hitch # 13138 will fit all models of the 1997 Ford Ranger except the GT models. So it will fit your stepside model as long as it is not a GT. I have linked the instructions and a video showing a typical installation for you.
If you plan on doing some towing I recommend etrailer ball mount kit # 989900. It comes with 2 ball mounts, 2 balls, a hitch pin and clip, and a storage bag. For trailer wiring use # 118325.
