Question:

I am trying to install the Curt trailer hitch #C11221 on a 2013 Chevy Volt. The welded nuts on the passenger side are very rusted over. I cant even see the threads on the nuts. Ive tried spraying with PB Blaster and using a nylon brush as shown in your video, but so far it has not cleared the threads. I am going to try and soak the threads over several days. If that fails, are there any other options for attaching that side of the hitch?

When installing a The Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver - Custom Fit - Class I - 1-1/4 inch # C11221 on a frame that the weld nuts are rusted out will require some special attention.

First you should spray a penetrating lubricant like WD40 into the nuts and allow it to work overnight. You can repeat this step for a few days if you have the time. Then you would need to use a tube brush # 814113 to help clean out the threads. This may require several solvent applications and brush cleanings to all the rust off the threads. It will not all come out on the first cleaning.

Next you can use a M12 X 1.75 pitch tap to chase the threads. This could be a little difficult and you want to try avoiding to break off the tap. I would recommend turning it clockwise one turn, then back it out 1/2 turn. You need to do this for each turn of the tap in each hole. This helps get metal fragments out of the hole's threads. Soaking the threads may help but I would recommend trying the tapping method.
