Is the Reese Friction Sway Control Kit Making Noise When Turning Normal
Published 03/18/2022 >
Question:
We just bought a new popup so still learning the ropes with towing it. The hitch, sway bar, etc.. were all installed by the dealer. We are towing with a 2017 Honda Pilot AWD. Our Sway bar makes a terrible noise with just the slightest turn. Not sure if loosening tension will help this but it cant be normal. We greesed the two ball joint connections with not much help. Should we loosen the tension screw? No issues with Sway on a pretty long trip, just this horrible noise. Some rookie mistakes, we did back the trailer a few times with the bar on it. Have learned now we shouldnt do that.

Believe it or not, the Reese Friction Sway Control Kit # 83660 making noise during a turn is normal. It is the sound of the friction material rubbing against the metal of the arm that attaches to the weight distribution head or ball mount. It's acceptable to lightly lubricate the balls at either end of the friction sway control that the unit rides on (which it sounds like you have done), but you should NOT lubricate the actuating arm of the sway control unit, as it will negate the sway control function.
That being said, you can over-tighten the adjustment screw which could lead to more noise. Various road conditions dictate how the friction control should be set. Per the instructions it should be tested and you should adjust the screw by 1/4 turns until you reach the desired control.
You are also correct that you should not back up with the sway control on.
Since you mentioned backing up with the Reese Friction Sway Control Kit # 83660 on, it can be easily bent when backing up. This could also lead to additional noise. I would take a good look at the bar and if it is bent, you should replace it.
