Yakima OnRamp Off-Road and RV Weight Rating Explained

Question:
Hello, Curious about this spec for this rack. Our bikes are 60 Lbs ea. and we’d like to have the option to carry them either on our flat tow or if needed on the RV hitch. The reduced weight limit seems to apply to off road, which makes sense but also to the RV. That seems odd to me given the greatest stress would come in the flat tow configuration. I checked their web site and couldn’t find anything other than the “weight capacity” spec. Just though I’d try and clarify if this is in fact correct. Thanks “Weight capacity: 66 lbs per bike Off-road and RV rated: 40 lbs per bike”

Great question!
The hitch receiver on motorhomes tends to sit further away from the rear axle than it does on a standard passenger vehicle which is why the weight rating reduction applies to both Off-Road and RV use for the Yakima OnRamp # Y36FR. Technically you could still use this on a motorhome but if any damage were to occur it wouldn't be covered under warranty.
For your application I recommend using the Hollywood Racks RV Rider Bike Rack # HLY64FR which can hold up to 80 lb bikes and the weight rating isn't reduced when you use it on an RV. The only application you can't use this for is a hitch on a towed trailer. The only downside to this rack is there aren't any ramps made to help with loading and unloading your heavier bikes.
I'm attaching review videos for both racks for you to check out.
