Aluminum Vs. Steel Trailer Wheels

Question:

Can you explain the difference in performance between aluminum and steel wheels and in your opinion which is the better, most reliable wheel. Does your company carry Carlisle tires? How would you compare Karrier tires to the Carlisle ST175/80R13 in load range C. Also what difference would it make in the overall performance of my trailer if I went up from load range C to load range D. Load range C shows as being 6 ply and Load range D shows as 8 ply. Is the 8 ply tire a better tire and will it last longer? Thanks for your help and have a blessed day.

The big advantage aluminum has over steel is corrosion resistance and being lighter weight. Steel is a stronger metal, but if the aluminum wheel has the rating to work for you setup it would be a better choice.

We do not carry Carlisle brand tires. All things being equal between the size and load rating I am sure the Carlisle brand would be similar to the Karrier tires.

Going to a higher load range certainly would not hurt, but if your trailer does fine with load range C and you have enough tire capacity then it may not be necessary to go to the higher capacity. The amount of plies the tires says it has is more of a rating system than an actual reflection of total plies in the tire. As far as performance goes you really would not see a large difference by going to a higher load rating unless you are overloading your current wheel/tire setup.

You should note that going to a higher load rating tire will not give you a higher towing capacity overall.
