Mudflap Option for Gen-Y Weight Distribution Shank Using 2-1/2 inch to 3 inch Hitch Adapter

Updated 12/07/2021 | Published 12/06/2021

Question:

I have an 2019 F-350 Diesel with SRW with Ford Factory Mud Flaps attached to the rear wheel wells it has a 3-inch receiver, it has a 2- ½ reducer with Ford factory backup sensors that are built into the rear bumper. The current hitch is utilizing the 2-1/2 inch receiver is a Gen-Y hitch with a weight distribution setup from Blue Ox that I purchased from you. One of the complaints about the Rock Tamer is that it covers up the backup sensors. I have included pics of the hitch setup. There is a 1 ½ inch gap between the reducer and the Gen-Y hitch, so there is a 1- ½ space available to mount the Rock Tamer’s metal collar around the shank. I don’t want to drive around with the rock tamer on all the time, removing the collar on and off the shank would be a lot of work, the current hitch setup weights 80 to 90 lbs. Pulling the hitch out of the receiver and ping the hitch on the ground is the easy part lifting it up again and lining it back up into the receiver is the hard part. What other options are available that work like the Rock Tamer that are easy to remove when not towing a trailer and/or without removing the Gen-Y hitch on a regular basis to install or remove wide mud flaps type that fits around the shank. Are there any wide mud flaps that can be mounted to the undercarriage under the bumper that can be installed and removed easily ?

The best solution for what you are wanting would be the RockTamers kit part # RT54FR which would fit on the 2-1/2 inch shank you have now. There isn't an easier to remove option than this as typically these kits don't get taken off and on with a lot of frequency. It could be that you leave it installed on the shank and when you are towing you remove the shank and the mudflap at same time since they wouldn't be needed.
