Question:
I have an Activator brake controller that Ive had for years. It has worked well up until now. I am finding that no matter where I slide the lever that controls the amount of brake applied to the trailer tires, it always comes on full force. Since Ive had this about 20 years now is it just at the end of its life cycle or can it be adjusted somehow? Thank you,

After 20 years it is certainly possible that it is time for a new brake controller, but there are a few things you can check before you decide to replace it. Since you have had this for such a long time and have not had any issues I will assume it has nothing to do with your output control and sync control settings.
I would start by checking your 7-way connection for corrosion or damage. Repair or clean as necessary. Assuming the 7-way is fine, I would double check my wiring. Make sure your ground is secure on a clean, bare-metal surface. You can also check your wiring for a short. If you find any spots with copper wire showing through, you can repair them with electrical tape.
If you end up needing a replacement and would like to stick with a time delayed brake controller, we do have the Draw-Tite Activator IV Trailer Brake Controller - 1 to 4 Axles - Time Delayed # 5504. If you would like to get a proportional controller so your brakes activate in proportion to your vehicle's braking action, I recommend the Tekonsha Voyager Trailer Brake Controller # 39510.
I have attached some installation and review videos, along with a helpful article on troubleshooting brake controllers for your reference.
