The first difference between the Curt Class II Hitch - 1-1/4" Hitch # C12170 and the Curt Class III - 2" Hitch # C13315 for your 2021 Mazda CX-5 is the fact that they have different hitch receiver openings. The Curt class II has a 1-1/4 inch receiver and the Curt class III has a 2-inch receiver. This is important to note when it comes to compatibility with accessories you wish to mount on your vehicle.

The second difference is the weight capacity. The # C12170 has a maximum tongue weight of 350 pounds and a maximum gross towing capacity of 3,500 pounds. The # C13315, on the other hand, has a maximum tongue weight of 600 pounds and a maximum gross towing capacity of 4,000 pounds.

Both of these hitches take about 50 minutes to install and have the same level of difficulty. They are both also manufactured in the U.S.

Given the facts, I recommend the # C13315 because 2-inch receivers generally have more compatible accessories, and it provides you with a greater weight capacity. I went ahead and linked installation videos of both hitches on a 2021 Mazda CX-5.
