How hard is it to pull and remove the tailgate and put it back on once you take it off.

In most cases, tailgates are designed to remove fairly easily to allow you to install a lift assist like the DeeZee # 74211. The 1997 F-250 you'll need to remove the cables that hold the tail gate to the truck bed , lower it about half way to pull the tail gate free from the body.
