Question:

I just install the 2800lb yellow sumo springs on my 2012 Tundra to help with pulling a 33ft Travel trailer. Hitch weight 900lbs. Does the job well. However unloaded my truck sits directly on the sumo therefore there is a stiffer ride. My question is do the shocks still engage to help with absorbing bumps in the road? Does the sumo compression enough that the shocks are engaging? If so I wont worry about it. If not should i but a rear shock like a Bilstein 5100 that will give me another one inch? Or should I get a softer Sumo?

According to the folks at SuperSprings, there should be a 1/2 to 1-1/2 inches of preload on an unloaded vehicle, so its likely that the suspension on your truck has worn to a small degree over the years.

SuperSprings tells me that if the unloaded ride is more firm than you'd like, it's perfectly acceptable to trim a half inch or so from the springs. Doing so will not cause any harm to the springs and you'll get a less firm ride when the vehicle is unloaded. This won't affect the loaded ride quality.

New shocks would likely return your vehicle to a point where it's close to the original ride height, and there is also a lower rated SumoSpring, part # SSR-610-40 what would be a bit less stiff.

Since the shocks on your truck are almost 10 years old and likely in need of replacement anyway, that's where I'd recommend starting.
